What is It?

“My Hero Journey” is a powerful toolkit that makes key standards in the curriculum engaging and meaningful. Students and educators alike will look forward to this part of the day, when they can go on a rewarding journey of self-discovery and apply it with Core Standards.

This dynamic and unique program is not an add-on to already busy schedules and overflowing lesson plans. It is an effective and efficient way to introduce, discuss, apply, and assess the Core standards in a meaningful way that the students and educators will be engaged in because it’s about them.

Most of the curriculum is given in the “outside in” approach, where information and data is presented to the student. Maybe it will sink in, maybe it won’t. Writing is very different. It’s the part of the curriculum that comes from the “inside out”. It comes from within the student – his or her thoughts, feelings, opinions, passions, understanding, fears, interests, etc. – and is expressed to the outside world. That is why “My Hero Journey” is so effective and engaging. It can take all parts of the curriculum and apply them to the students’ experiences and thoughts – their stories.

“My Hero Journey” is an instant and dynamic way to discover and apply key Core standards in literacy. However, it goes beyond that. It is a powerful toolkit for Character Education, class management, social skills, and much more. “My Hero Journey” enables students to discover, appreciate, and celebrate their own stories – as well as the stories of others.

This isn’t just a whirlwind program to go with whatever is trending. “My Hero Journey” uses the standards of literacy to leave a legacy.

Curriculum is packaged according to grade bands

K-2; 3-4; 5-6; 7-9; 10-12.

Story prompts, guides, and activities through the lessons will all help prepare them to write their story at the end.

Lesson Structure

The MHJ curriculum is made up of 9 lessons. The facilitators administrating the curriculum can determine the pace at which you work through those lessons. Some facilitators are choosing to focus on one lesson a month creating a class culture around the concepts. Others are choosing to use it as a learning unit that will be over a 9-12 week period.

Delivery Day

The culmination project of this curriculum is that each participant will go online and digitally create a storybook all about them, complete with their hero journey.  Students will upload photos of themselves, or use some of our pre-made life quote photos to fill photo slots, and type their story into the provided template. The students will receive a full-color copy of their book all about them!
